High Water Bills? Check Your Toilet

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that more than 1.25 trillion gallons of water — equivalent to the annual water use of Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami combined — leak from U.S. homes each year and in many cases, from toilets.

According to the EPA, toilets account for nearly 30% of indoor water consumption in American homes. Old, inefficient toilets are responsible for the majority of the water wasted, 200 gallons a day each in some cases.

If you’ve been noticing high water bills or wetness in your bathroom, it may be time to give your john a good inspection. Look for water pooling, leaks, or cracks in your toilet and its pipes. More often than not, all it takes is just a simple fix in order to repair your leak – and your bank account. By doing routine maintenance and keeping an eye out for leaks, you can help to eliminate high water costs in your home.
