An Eco-Friendly History Lesson: The Evolution of Green Cleaning

housewife cleaning appliances An Eco Friendly History Lesson: The Evolution of Green Cleaning

Green cleaning practices have been evolving since the 1960s

There are many environmentally friendly policies, products, and processes that are in place today, but this was not always the case.  The formation and movement towards an environmentally conscious culture began developing in the 1960’s and is still evolving today.

Society began to think about the danger of chemicals in products and how they effect the environment.  This led to the formation of regulatory bodies like the Environmental Protection Agency, and later Green Seal.  Eventually more policies were put in place at state and federal levels, making various industries have to re-evaluate their own methods and comply with new environmentally friendly procedures.  The following is a brief timeline of major events in the history of Green products and policies.

1962 – Silent Spring by biologist Rachel Carson detailed and questioned the extensive spraying of DDT, a pesticide, without understanding the environmental impacts or effects on humans and wildlife.

1970 – Formation of the Environmental Protection Agency

1972 – The use of DDT as a pesticide was banned in the US.

1978 – CFC’s were banned from aerosol cans due to their effect on ozone depletion.

1980’s – A string of products were released that carried the labeling “Environmentally Friendly.”  However, there were no regulations in place for determining if a product was really environmentally friendly.

1989 – Green Seal, an independent, non-profit body for developing certifications and standards for environmentally friendly products was formed.

1992 – Bill Clinton signed Executive order 13101, defining “green cleaning” and forcing roughly 100,000 organizations to switch to green alternatives.

1995 – Formation of the Environmental Choice Program, another regulatory body that helps create standards for Green Products.

2000 – Bill Clinton signs Executive order 13148, expanding the scope of Executive order 13101.

2005 – Washington becomes the first state to enact Green Building legislation – an environmentally responsible method for designing, operating, maintaining, and demolishing buildings and structures.

2006 – New York requires the use of green products in all public and private schools.

As technology develops, the level of refinement increases in new products and procedures.  The future of Green is sure to hold new and exciting changes! Check out green cleaning products at CleaningProductsWorld!

30 DAYS CPW free clorox order 100 Green Giveaway and Guest Post Guide to Green Your Spring

Today we are featuring a guest post by Julie Urlaub, Founder and Managing Partner from the Taiga Company. Julie consults, writes, speaks, blogs and tweets on how viewing your world through the lens of sustainability can refresh your business and deliver uncommon results. As a catalyst for sustainability, a matchmaker for green business relationships and a promoter of green products and services, her effervescent attitude inspires others to eco-action.

Guide to Green Your Spring

It is that time of year to begin your spring cleaning. People across the country are breaking out the cleaning supplies and lawn equipment to give their homes and yard a fresh clean look. In doing so, there are a few sustainability concepts to consider. Individuals aiming to become more sustainable in their personal life have a variety of eco actions at their disposal.
Green clean your home by replacing conventional cleaning supplies with eco-friendly products. Conventional cleaning supplies may contain ingredients that are toxic or hazardous. By replacing them with eco-friendly products, you’re providing improved indoor air quality, as well as using products aligned with sustainability concepts. There’s an abundance of alternative products from which to choose. Ideas mentioned in our personal consulting practice include:

Seventh Generation is an industry leader renowned for its nontoxic cleaning products.
• Mrs. Meyers also offers nontoxic cleaners and all of the company’s cleaning supplies are biodegradable and incorporate natural essential oils to provide a pleasant cleaning experience.
• Ecover makes its biodegradable, nontoxic cleaners from plant based ingredients and is powered by green energy in the making of its products.

In addition, apply that same eco awareness outside the house to your yard work. Traditional fertilizers and mulch often contain chemicals that are not only bad for the environment but can be hazardous to your health. With the variety of eco-friendly products available, you no longer have to sacrifice quality and price to have a great looking organic yard. Here is a list of alternative products offered at your local Home Depot or Lowes:

Take the next step with coreless or tubeless toilet paper and paper towel rolls and eliminate waste and help your home or business go even greener.

According to a recent article in the USA Today, “Seventeen billion toilet paper tubes produced annually in the USA account for 160 million pounds of trash. That’s [a trip] from here to the moon and back – twice.”

One company that has gone tubeless is Kimberly Clark, who has reassured users with their patented winding technology on their tubes of toilet paper to ensure that the roll fits properly over the spindle.

Dial Basics Liquid Hand Soap kills germs while still being green!

Dial’s Green Assurance Program has launched two types of Dial Basics Hand Soap: a liquid hand soap and a foaming hand soap. Both soaps are dermatologist tested and hypoallergenic, perfect for use for sensitive skin. The liquid hand soap leaves a floral fragrance and leaves hands with a lotiony feel, while the foaming hand soap cleanses while being gentle on hands.

Don’t Waste Water: How to Save Water and Protect the Environment

lowflowfaucet1 300x225 Dont Waste Water: How to Save Water and Protect the Environment

Installing a low flow faucet aerator can help save water and protect the environment.

Ideas for how to clean greener range from using green cleaning products to reusable rags to energy efficient appliances. But how often do you consider how much water you are using? Keeping tabs on the amount of water you are using and making a conscious effort to cut back will have a positive impact on the environment. Ways to cut back on water usage include the use of low flow hoses, limiting the use of your ice maker, and installing a low flow toilet.

Low flow toilets are great ideas for limiting water usage in the restroom. Newer, high efficiency toilets use two gallons of water per flush, whereas older, traditional toilets use up to five gallons. Combine the use of a low flow toilet with recycled toilet paper to make your bathroom as green as possible!

Another great idea for limiting water usage in both the bathroom and the kitchen is to use a low-flow faucet aerator, which will change your water flow from 2.2 gallons per minute to 1.5 gallons per minute.

Limiting the use of water in all areas of your home will make it greener and have positive effects on the environment! Start exploring how using low flow toilets, low flow hoses and faucet aerators, and limiting the use of your ice maker can drastically help save water and protect the environment.

Nature’s Source Green Cleaners Review

DRK CB701900 Natures Source Green Cleaners ReviewNature’s Source has a  line of green cleaning supplies including all purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner, and toilet cleaner. All products are 99% natural and contain the trusted cleaning power of Scrubbing Bubbles. The line also includes Nature’s Source Glass Cleaner, powered with Windex.

I like the Nature’s Source Glass Cleaner because it has same streak-free shine that Windex has. My windows are looking great to let the Spring sunshine in! The glass cleaner is composed of plant-based cleaners, corn-based ethanol, and purified water. Even the packaging is green-with a bottle made from recycled plastic.

Nature’s Source All Purpose Cleaner contains natural plant-based cleaning agents sourced from coconut or palm-kernel oils mixed with purified water. I love that this cleaning product cuts through tough grease and grime while being gentle on the environment. Nature’s Source All Purpose Cleaner works great in my apartment, whether it be kitchen countertops, my dining room table, even for small spills on the floor! It smells great and I don’t have to worry about poisoning my cat or a lingering chemical scent.

Nature’s Source Bathroom Cleaner is also derived from plant-based cleaning agents. It combines the natural power of purified water and lactic acid to cut through soap scum and dirt in my shower, tub, or sink.  My tile and chrome bathroom fixtures were spotless and shiny after using Nature’s Source Bathroom Cleaner.

Nature’s Source Toilet Cleaner naturally breaks down the stains caused by organic matter or hard water. The worst part about cleaning a toilet is the awful strong smell of the chemical product. Nature’s Source leaves a fresh, total clean without the smell. I especially enjoy the bottle design that allows the product to be squirted under the toilet rim.

Nature’s Source line of environmentally friendly cleaning products allow users to have a clean home or office while knowing they are not having a negative impact on the environment.
