The Germiest room in your House? No, it’s not the Bathroom. It’s the Kitchen!

kitchen The Germiest room in your House? No, its not the Bathroom. Its the Kitchen! Many people think that with all that goes on in the bathroom, it’s the  germiest place in your house. Well, you are wrong! In fact, the kitchen has  far higher rates of germs. This article from WebMD details all the places  bacteria is hiding in your kitchen, and how to get rid of them!

    Zap away bugs.
Kitchen sponges are the No. 1 source of germs in the whole house. Why? The moist, micro-crevices that make a sponge such an effective cleaning device also make it a cozy home for germs and more difficult to disinfect. Wiping your counters or dishes with a dirty sponge will only transfer the bacteria from one item to another. “Wet your sponge and then pop it in the microwave for two minutes to eliminate the germs that lurk inside the crevices,” says Neil Schachter, MD, medical director of respiratory care at Mount Sinai in New York City, and the author of The Good Doctor’s Guide to Colds and Flu.

    Wipe away germs.
Faucet handles, refrigerator door handles, and doorknobs are next on the list of kitchen culprits that aid and abet germs. Use disinfectant spray or wipes on sink faucets, refrigerator handles, stove handles, cupboard handles, trashcans, doorknobs, and any other area that you touch with your hands. “These sprays or wipes kill germs on contact,” explains Schachter. “This is really important and should be done several times a day before and after touching these objects,” he says. “Don’t forget to wipe down the telephone,” adds Charles Gerba, PhD, a professor of microbiology at University of Arizona in Tucson. “A lot of times, someone is cooking and has a question for the original chef, so he or she calls their parents to find out how to make it and the bacteria gets slopped on the phone and it grows.”

    Clean the cutting board.
Cracks and crevices in your cutting board provide plenty of space for bacteria to grow. “The average cutting board has about 200% more fecal bacteria than the average toilet seat,” Gerba says. “People don’t disinfect cutting boards,” he says, and they should. “Don’t cut up chicken and then salad on the same cutting board without disinfecting it,” he stresses. Better yet, “use separate boards for raw meat and making salads.” Plus, he says it’s important to clean and disinfect inside the fridge, microwave, cupboards and other surfaces that come into frequent contact with food.

    Dust out the drain.
The drains in both your kitchen sink and bathtub provide yet another moist hideaway for bacteria. “To kill these bugs where they live use baking soda and an old toothbrush to get rid of stains, grit, and grime around drains,” Schachter says. “Disinfect drains regularly as you would any other surface.”

50 Germiest Places in the World

I saw this article on the Forensic Scientist Blog and thought it was really interesting. Some of these you would never expect! If you want to see the entire list, you should read the article, but here are some of my favorites.

    1. Portable Toilets- A combination of high traffic and no plumbing make portable toilets a veritable Shangri-La for bacteria and other microbes.

    4. Kitchen Sinks- Most people do not realize it, but kitchen sinks are one of the dirtiest places in the home, harboring used dishes and their accompanying decaying food particles. People also use them to wash clothes, as substitute toilets when vomit does not want to stay down, and other lovely unsanitary things.

    9. Playgrounds- Hardly surprising, given children’s fondness for mining gold without ever actually having to pan or chip away rock for it. Swings, jungle gyms, and other equipment where kids have to use their hands rank as the dirtiest.

    23. Keyboards- The sweat and oils from fingers and hands leave behind grime and communicable diseases such as the flu, colds, strep throat, and others. Public computers at libraries, schools, and other organizations pose the most threat.

    30. Bathtubs and Shower Curtains- People may exits their bath tubs feeling sparkly and clean, but the receptacles themselves harbor dead skin cells, oils, and daily grime that get washed off with soap and water.

    47. Money- Coins and paper dollars alike change hands quickly, as a result transferring germs, grease, and grime from one person to another. They only become dirtier and dirtier as they move about in circulation, accumulating a little bit of every owner on their surface.

Don’t worry- CleaningProductsWorld.com sells products like Lysol & Clorox that will keep these items germ-free!

Disinfectants could give rise to antibiotic-resistant superbugs

An article on CNN.com caught my eye this morning claiming that disinfectants (like antibiotics) can end up strengthening those dreaded “superbugs.”

“Researchers grew a bacteria associated with hospital-acquired infections in the presence of a common disinfectant and found that the bacteria became 12 times less susceptible to the disinfectant.

But they also found that the same bacteria became 256 times more resistant to a widely used antibiotic — ciprofloxacin — even though the bacteria had never been exposed to it.”

You know how your doctors are getting stingy with antibiotics? I really hope the grocery store doesn’t stop selling Lysol and Simple Green!

    Cleaning Products Myths

Cleaning MythsWe all know some intriguing and sometimes questionable cleaning myths – Did you hear the one about adding baking soda to tomato juice to clean red wine? While most of these cleaning myths and old maid tricks are plainly laughable like the later one above, some have profound basis and actually work.  For example, hair spray, due to its alcohol content, is capable of moving some types of stains.

Below our three of the most common cleaning myths debunked:

Myth #1) The more of a cleaning product you use, the more likely you are to remove the problem area
50/50 –If you are having trouble with a product treating a stain or something similar, the answer is not going to be to add more product. Most commonly, the cleaning product is not working because you are not using the right product, not using the right accessory, or simply not using enough elbow grease. I gave this myth a 50/50 because sometimes people over dilute their concentrated cleaners and forget to use the right proportion to treat larger problem areas; In both cases, it’s OK to add more product.  The basic principal to keep in mind is that more product DOES NOT equal more cleaning power.

Myth #2) You should never use your vacuum to clean anything besides your carpet.
FALSE – Vacuums these days are capable of serving as your best mate when cleaning.  Most have special settings to allow you to clean your hardwood floors and the extensions make cleaning fans, blinds, drapes, and furniture MUCH easier.

Myth #3) Always spray polish directly onto your wood furniture.
FALSE – You should NEVER apply furniture polish directly onto your furniture.  First, dust off the piece and then apply the furniture polish onto a microfiber cleaning cloth or other towel. This protects the furniture’s coat much more effectively, leaving it looking shiny for year to come.

While the Yankees and Phillies are polishing their bats for the 2009 World Series, another group of teams recently geared up for a World Series of their own – the World Series of Housekeeping.

The first event of its kind, the games were sponsored by the Metropolitan Memphis Hotel & Lodging Association in the South Hall of the Memphis Cook Convention Center.  Twelve four-member teams from the Memphis, TN area raised money for the University of Memphis’s Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management and competed in unique housekeeping-themed games such as toilet paper bowling, housekeeping cart relay race through an obstacle course, blinded bed make-off, and various other events.

Overall, the World Series of Housekeeping was a huge success from both a management and employee prospective, all while raising money for a great cause. Managers praised the event as an excellent team building exercise that showcases how important and talented their oftentimes-overlooked housekeeping staff is. Staff members  undoubtedly enjoyed their break from their usual routines, while getting the experience to interact with other hotel’s staff.

    World Series of Housekeeping Results
    Champions: Memphis Grizzlies House
    Runners-Up: Crowne Plaza
Third Place: Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel

Other Competing Teams: Benchmark Hotel, Hampton Inn & Suites, Holiday Inn Select East, Residence Inn Downtown, Courtyard by Marriott Collierville,, Hilton Garden Inn Southhaven, the Madison Hotel, Memphis Marriott Downtown and the Peabody Hotel

While this World Series may have only lasted a day, their efforts year round are no easy task. Congratulations to the Champions at the Memphis Grizzlies House and to all other competing teams – The work you do always makes our hotel stays as clean, warm, and inviting as possible.

What to Know When Purchasing Trash Bags

So many choices... so little time!

So many choices... so little time! Which one is right for you?

While purchasing garbage bags may seem like an easy task, there are actually many features and aspects one should consider. We all know one of the dirtiest and most annoying tasks is cleaning up a spill when a trash bag breaks and you may also be wasting additional money on high quality bags than what your needs actually require.  So the next time you’re ordering can liners, consider these important features to prevent feature mishaps:

    Different Strength Levels
    •    Light – crumbled paper, paper cups, etc
    •    Medium – packaging waster, cardboard, wet paper, etc
    •    Heavy – light wood, metal scraps, wet cardboard, etc
    •    Extra Heavy – Heavy, sharp, or wet trash
    •    Super Extra Heavy – Warehouse, Cafeteria, or Facility waste

High Density (HD) vs. Low Density (LD)
    •    High Density Trash Bags- much thinner than low density liners, but are capable of holding greater weight; They feature better puncture resistance and load capacity.
    •    Low Density Trash Bags – Recommended for sharper objects and tougher transport conditions. They feature greater tear resistance compared to high density garbage bags.

    Bottom Seal Types
    •   Star Seal -  This is the most common type of seal and the most reliable of the three.  It eliminates gaps along the seal line, which allows these liners to more easily take the shape of any size/style garbage can.  They are also popular because they more evenly distribute weight within the bag – maximizing load capacity and preventing leaks.
    •    Gusset Seal – Used on flat-style trash bags; An economical choice recommended for light loads only (paper, etc)
    •    Flat Seal – Create strong bottom seals to prevent bottom leaks, but may leak from the corners due to design.  Their flat seal also prevents them from conforming as easily to trash containers.

    Cored vs. Coreless Rolls

    •   Cored Rolls – Rolls which are rolled around a cardboard cylinder (similar to toilet paper/paper towels).
    •    Coreless Rolls – Rolls w/o cylinder in the middles; recommended for high traffic areas

    Mils vs Microns
    •    Mils – generally used to denote the thickness of low density liners (convert to microns by multiplying the number of mils x 25.4)
    •    Microns – generally used to denote the thickness of high density liners (convert to mils by dividing the number of microns by 25.4)

And you thought you were just buying a simple garbage bag?!  Whatever garbage can liner you decide is the best fit for your needs, remember to visit CleaningProductsWorld.com for low prices, next day shipping, and unbeatable customer service.

Smoke odors cause increased feelings of anxiety, fear, and danger

One of the hardest smells to ignore is the smell of smoke. Smoke smells cause our bodies to experience increased levels of anxiety, fear, and danger; even when we know we are actually not in any immediate danger. Since the brain strongly associates smoke with harmful fires, even when we consciously realize we are in no danger, the odor of smoke causes our brains to go against our reasoning and tells us otherwise.

The folks at Glade have once again come up with a great solution for this often times over looked problem with the Glade Smoke Odor Neutralizer. This product is capable of eliminating even the most persistent, powerful odors, yet is not overbearing. We all know another annoying odor is that of lingering air fresheners, and thankfully, Glade does too.
Ideal for use in commercial, industrial, or institutional settings, you’ll get your moneys worth with this product because it is specially formulated to instantly and continuously deodorize not just the air, but carpets as well.
