Laundromat Woes: No Coin-Op Hypoallergenic Laundry Detergent??

laundromat 008 Large Laundromat Woes: No Coin Op Hypoallergenic Laundry Detergent??So, since moving to the new house, I’ve been going to the laundromat since we don’t have a washer and dryer.

I arrived at the laundromat and was faced with the awful realization that I had forgotten my scent free hypoallergenic laundry detergent. Instead of driving the half of a mile home, I decided I would just use the coin-op vending machine laundry detergent.

I was a little disappointed with the selection, the only laundry detergent was Gain. I used Gain on all my clothes and blankets. I did notice that they smelled amazing! Normally I use an unscented laundry detergent for my sensitive skin, but Gain was okay in a pinch. I will not be using it again though, because I have noticed a slightly higher itch factor to my clothes. No major allergic reactions, but it’s not fun to be scratching all the time! Now I know why I switched to a hypoallergenic detergent in the beginning!!

I hope laundromats will consider stocking a coin-op detergent for those with sensitive skin. Maybe Seventh Generation would consider making one available?

Laundry Tips: When to wash winter outerwear

hatscarfmittens 300x213 Laundry Tips: When to wash winter outerwearKnowing when to wash outerwear and winter gear can sometimes be confusing. Here is a quick guide to keep your winter clothing looking great.

  1. Sweatshirts can be washed every six or seven wears (by machine). Be sure to use a quality laundry detergent that is compatible with your washing machine. Hypoallergenic laundry detergent is also available for sensitive skin users.
  2. Hats, gloves, scarves can be washed every 3-5 weeks (by hand).
  3. Washing sweaters depends on the material. Cotton, silk and cashmere sweaters can be washed every 3 wears (by hand). Wool and polyester blends are more durable, so wash them every 5 wears.

Make sure to follow garment’s label care instruction as some fabrics require delicate hand washing techniques, and one time through the washer or dryer will forever change the appearance or size of the garment!

Why is Dawn Dishwashing Liquid the only product used for cleaning birds?

DawnLogoWhite Why is Dawn Dishwashing Liquid the only product used for cleaning birds?Last year we wrote about how Dawn dishwashing soap is used to save wildlife.

The latest oil spill left many animals in need of aid. When bird rescue organizations started cleaning, they chose to only use Dawn dishwashing liquid. According to this  Chicago Tribute article, other cleaning products were turned down by, even when offered as a donation. There is no clear contract stating that Dawn is the exclusive product used for cleaning birds, so it is questionable why only Dawn is the chosen brand.

Procter & Gamble Co. has donated about 12,000 bottles of Dawn to the Gulf efforts, according to a spokesperson for P&G. Large birds, like pelicans, can require as many as three bottles of Dawn to get clean.

Check out Dawn Dishwashing Liquid at CleaningProductsWorld.com to see what all the fuss is about.

This Year’s Back to School Lists Include Cleaning Supplies

0728classroom 300x225 This Years Back to School Lists Include Cleaning SuppliesWith school budgets being slashed across the country, many back to school student lists are now including some cleaning and janitorial supplies.

Toilet paper, cleaning wipes, and Kleenex are among the usual required pencils and crayons. Some news stories report that parents are outraged that they must help supply items that won’t be “directly” used by their children. Schools defend that it teaches kids to share.

Do you think that cleaning products should be on back to school supply lists?

Happy 96th Anniversary Clorox!

Clorox 1st site Happy 96th Anniversary Clorox!

The first Clorox site; Oakland, CA

96 years ago, the Clorox Company purchased its first plant site in Oakland, California for a whopping $3,000.  Although the company has gone through much growth and expansion since then, its corporate headquarters is still located in this city about eight miles east of San Francisco.

The company initially choose this unique location for its first site due to the excess brine (water saturated with salt) in San Francisco Bay’s salt ponds.  The founders planned on turning the brine into bleach through electrolysis, which was an innovation process at the time.  Since the process involved mixing chlorine and sodium hyroxide, Abel M. Hamblet, (one of the five founders), proposed calling their product “Clorox”.  A quick sketch later and Clorox was officially born.

Wipe Out Stains on Your White Tee

We’ve all been there. It’s a hot summer day and you’re enjoying an ice cream…until it drips on your shirt. You’re out at a barbecue and then “Oops!”, a barbecued rib slips off your plate and into your lap. Maybe you’re out for a jog in the park, when you trip on your shoelace and skid through that patch of grass. Stains happen to all of us, especially when we least expect it, and although we try to be careful, every now and then it seems like the worst spills end up on our favorite white tees. Don’t worry about next time. Here are three great ways for you to clean up and get the stains out of your favorite white tee:

Method 1: Dish Detergent

It’s great for getting pesky grease stains out of your pans and now, it can work on your clothing. First, choose a grease fighting brand of dish detergent. Next, squirt some directly on the stain and let it soak in. It may take awhile. For more stubborn stains, use a toothbrush to give it a bit of scrub. Finally, wash or rewash the t-shirt1133561 white shirt Wipe Out Stains on Your White Tee in hot water.

Method 2: Laundry Booster

To boost the power of your traditional detergent, you could always add some borax or baking soda to your load of laundry, or if you can find one that works well for your clothing, a normal stain remover could do the trick.

Method 3: Bleach

It’s been a trusted fixer of stains for many years and it can be just the thing to fix up your stain problem. Add a bit to your load of whites.
