Home Improvement Products That Could Let You Down

ducttape 300x168 Home Improvement Products That Could Let You DownEver buy a product that just doesn’t live up to your expectations?  Fox News shares their top home improvement products that are not right for the job they are meant to do.  I can’t say I completely agree with all of them, but some of their advice seems like it could save you some time and money by doing the job correctly the first time.

 1) Duct Tape – Surprisingly topping their list is duct tape.  I suppose if you literally intend to use duct tape only for repairing an air duct, there are better products to use.  However, I’ve always believed duct tape (along with WD-40) can repair just about anything and, for your dollar, are the two most useful items you can have in your home.

2) Liquid Drain Cleaner – The Fox News article says drain cleaners often do not work, and on top of that are highly toxic.  Admittedly, I have very little experience with clogged drains.  Only on two occasions have I had to use a drain cleaner, once it worked just fine, another time I had to use a flexible hair clog extractor to remove a clump of hair that looked like it was dropped from a wookie.

3) On to a more agreeable note – Plastic cone wall anchors, which are the cheap anchors that typically come with products that need wall mounting do not work very well in drywall.  Unfortunately, most people hang these items into drywall.  Confused as to which anchor to use for your project?  This article by Thisoldhouse.com is very informative.

I don’t think these products are necessarily bad, they just need to be used with realistic expectations.  Ever use any of the products discussed?  Share your opinions of them in the comments below!

I find that most natural products work a lot better than these brand name products. Vinegar, Citric Acid, Bi-Carb Soda and Boiling water will unclog almost any drain and with a few drops of lavender oil will make it smell great to.

I do agree with the duct tape and wd-40. Great products and you really can’t do without them.

    Good article.

I had a bad experience with a particular drain cleaner on one occasion. A clogged drain had stressed me out. Actually I had been away for 3 weeks and when I got back I discovered this blocked drain. I used this drain cleaner and followed the instructions on it. Somehow it did not work. The fumes emanated were obnoxious to say the least. Had to get in a plumber so sort that out. Haven’t really understood how these drain cleaners work and in what conditions. Do they cut through hair lumps that clog the drain? How do I select the right cleaning supplies?
